  • Richard Deacon was born in Bangor, Wales, UK in 1949 and lives and works in London, UK. He has a BA from St Martin’s School of Art, London, UK (1972) and an MA from the Royal College of Art, London, UK (1977)

Richard Deacon is a leading British sculptor, best known for his large, lyrical open forms. In a career spanning more than four decades, Richard Deacon has employed materials ranging from laminated wood and polycarbonate to leather, cloth and clay. He works on both domestic and large scales, combining organic forms with elements of engineering. His continuously changing methods of construction are a result of developments in his sculptural approach, reflected by his use of sinuous bent wood, contorted steel and highly glazed ceramics.

Deacon’s first one-man show was held in 1978 at The Gallery, Brixton, London.  This led to a string of solo exhibitions, both nationally and internationally. Since 1981 Deacon has participated in many key group exhibitions throughout the world.  A major retrospective of his work The Missing Part was shown at the Musée d’Art Moderne et Contemporain, Strasbourg, in 2010, travelling to the Sprengel Museum in Hannover in 2011. Tate Britain mounted a major survey in 2014. Kunstmuseum Winterthur, Switzerland showed a ten-year survey On The Other Side in 2015. A full retrospective of his prints and drawings was presented at the Folkwang Museum in Essen, Germany in 2016.

Richard Deacon won the Turner Prize in 1987 and the Robert Jakobsen Prize, Museum Würth, Künzelsau, Germany, in 1995. In 1997 he was awarded Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres, France, elected a Royal Academician in 1998 and made CBE in 1999. In 2005 the University of Leicester awarded him an honorary doctorate. He was elected a member of the Akademie der Kunst in Berlin in 2010
