• As one of the most creatively vital conceptual artists on the domestic scene, Shi Jinsong has deployed his nimble, variable cogitations and language-means to discuss a range of key propositions in art history and sociology. In recent years he has turned toward explorations of effective avenues for public art.

“Grayness 360” is a many-year investigative project by Shi Jinsong. It was initiated in December 2012, which happens to be when the world was supposed to end, according to a legendary prediction. By now he has accumulation a massive quantity of interview transcripts, video clips, found objects and craftworks made with repurposed pigment-material. Shi Jinsong believes that “every instanc3e of affection, every story will eventually be ground into a streak of dust, and these can coalesce into color phenomena of unique grayness.” His narrators provide him objects that are somehow linked with memories; he grinds these up to make pigments of varying grayness and reconfigures them into a “brand-new color chart,” which he hopes will be assimilated into everyday life.

His exhibition, titled “Speak...Grayness,” stresses the shaping of fragmentary memorials to living things and to the cosmic state of suspension. In answer to his far-flung investigations, he chooses restrained forms. Structural relations of the three exhibition rooms can be viewed as a continuously advancing camera shot which emphasizes the process of a viewer's immersion.

The exhibition will be held at Yilang International during “Gallery Week Beijing” and will run from March 23 to April 23. In the the third exhibition room you will find the a “Grayness Lab,” which will be open for viewing by appointment during the exhibition's run.

Special thanks to Phoenix Arts and SIMPLE LIVING, we acknowledge their support and sponsorship for the production and video shooting of the exhibition.
